Men who have sex with men on the West Coast (sounds like a great song, no?) are being encouraged by health professionals to get tested for STDs following a recent uptick in the number of ocular syphilis cases.
Ocular syphilis is an STD that can cause permanent blindness. According to theLA Times, there have recently been more than a dozen cases reported between Seattle and San Francisco; Los Angeles health officials just declared the city’s first two.
Though more than half of the cases have affected HIV-positive men, health officials warn that anyone can contract ocular syphilis through sexual contact.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein, who championed legislation that led to California’s ban on the production of bareback porn, said the new cases “highlight the importance of ongoing, regular check-ups for sexually-active individuals.”
This has been your friendly reminder to get tested!
