2nd annual Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event – please participate in the resource fair!

Please circulate far and wide (and quickly!)

nwghaad-thankyouLogoNational Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is an annual observance to recognize the impact of HIV on women and girls. For the second year in a row, the Los Angeles County HIV Drug & Alcohol Task Force (HIV DATF) is partnering with The City of Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to produce an awareness event. This year we plan to hold it at Jim Gillian Park (4000 S La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90008). Last year we held our event in MacArthur Park.  Please visit our website to see what last year’s event looked like: https://hivdatf.org/2016trainings/women-and-girls-hivaids-awareness-day-2016/.  This year, NWGHAAD falls on March 10th, so we are moving forward quickly.

Every year we want to bring an awareness event to the people who need it most.  Did you know that the HIV infection rate for black women is 9.5 times higher than white women, and 6 times higher than Latina women? Of the 5,501 women living with HIV, 35% are black women.  And the thing that may be easiest to address at an event like this: the Stage III diagnosis rate for black women was 8 times higher than the rate for white or Latina women[1].

The goal of our event is to get as many people – especially women and the people who partner with them – tested for HIV during our time at the park as possible. To that end, we plan to have a testing van which can provide on-site rapid testing. We plan to have free food and raffle prizes. We will host a resource fair, and will have a DJ. We are also going to have a Zumba instructor participate. We will also host a space for folks who want to make art. We know that when we are using the creative side of our brains (listening to music, dancing, making art) we become more open and less rigid in our thinking. We hope that this will work quietly to break down resistance to testing, and to hearing the information that is available.

We would like to partner with other community groups and agencies. Would you be interested in working with us on this project?

WE NEED RSVPs FOR THE RESOURCE FAIR NO LATER THAN 02/10/17 (document attached)
