Los Angeles Women’s Collaborative on HIV/AIDS, Organizer of LA Women’s PrEP Network
In areas of Los Angeles County, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a healthcare enigma because they are largely preventable epidemics. As it relates to the public health problems, people of color (Blacks and Latinos) are most affected. STDs are predictive of HIV contraction. The HIV infection rate among African American/Black women is 20 times higher than for White women, and in 2009, HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death for African American/Black women ages 25-34. The Los Angeles Women’s Collaborative on HIV/AIDS was created to be a force in generating policies around, and support collaborative community-based research on, gender- and culturally-responsive prevention interventions targeting women, especially African /Black women and Latinas.
